ASHBY HOUSE, LTD
Building A Caring Community, One Family At A Time
The History of Ashby House, Ltd
The Ashby House Project has its roots in the Concerned Citizen’s Task Force that was formed in 1990. The Task Force was comprised of several persons who came together with the common goal of helping the homeless in Salina.
In April 1991, the house at 150 S 8th in Salina became available for a shelter. Formerly used as a halfway house for recovering alcoholic men, the property belonged to the Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas. From May 1991 to February 1992, Ashby House, Ltd. was incorporated and the house was made ready for use as a homeless shelter.
Bryan Anderson became the Administrator in December 1995. He became an excellent resource manager. He reduced ineffective use of resources and waste. Bryan worked hard with outside groups to generate support for Ashby House.
In 1998, Ashby House purchased the apartment building at 153 S 8th, to be used as transitional housing homeless families shelter. The two step program for emergency and transitional shelter helped serve women in the Salina area.
Later in 1998, Kathy Allen joined the staff of Ashby House.
In 2003, prompted by the sadness of the loss of three women who had previously lived in the homeless shelter and had died in their addiction, Bryan and Kathy began the process of converting the property at 153 S 8th into a residential substance abuse treatment program for women.
On November 5, 2004, Ashby House’s treatment program accepted its first mother with children, and grew to be able to offer assessments, intensive outpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, aftercare, and onsite childcare in addition to its residential services.
In 2008, Ashby House purchased a house at 206 W Walnut, which will be used for sheltering homeless and/or substance abusing pregnant and early postpartum women, and will be the next step in a seamless continuum of care for Ashby House families.
